Jack Napalm - Musicians Institute Summer Shot 2009

My time at Summer Shot was well spent and the week went along pretty damn well, until Saturday.  I almost left Summer Shot on a sour note, pun intended, but thanks to some good fortune my whole experience was fantastic.  Here's a little story about how I learned Soak up the Sun by Cheryl Crow.

Here are some pictures that my wife took of the live performance on Saturday. Miss Jimi is the name of the band I ended up in at the last minute. More on that in an upcoming post. Now on to the pictures.

This is right off Hollywood Blvd. and is what is called The Passage. During school hours this place is busy with all sorts of activity. It was nice to see it at peace Sunday morning.

After a slight issue early on the day ended on a good note. This is a shot from one of the early bands. Pictures and more of my story to come.

Day three with Ken.  This guy is contagious!  He has such a great attitude and personality he would be very hard to dislike.  This is a small clip.  Wish I had gotten more video but I do have some audio I will sort through at some point.

Just got done with my second, and last, private lesson. The two hours have really been beneficial. We have been able to hone in some simple but essential techniques and make progress in a short time.

We also went over my solo for the live performance tomorrow. In doing so we tidied up a few loose parts. I start the solo with a Dokken lick. We will see if anyone picks up on it.

Today was the final day of this series. Today we started getting into a little deeper theory and how to change the tonality of a progression by playing differen modes. All in the same position.
We also stared looking at 16th note rhythm patterns. This led into playing in a multiple guitar band. This is an area I was looking forward to.
These classes were the nuts an bolts of the program and have been invaluable.

I didn't have anything scheduled today so I spent moat of the day working on the song the band is playing Safurday. We got together this afternoon and changed some parts so I am hoping everyone will be on the SE page. I spent the evening trying to come up with a solo for a song that doesn't have one.
Tomorrow I have a full day of scheduled classes and another Steiger seminar.

I sat through the second part of Robins songwriting series today. This seminar focused in harmony and learning about modes.
Thes seminars are two hours long and a lot of information is thrown at you. I recorded this session as well so I can go back to this stuff at a later date. If you are thinking of going to Summer Shot take something to record as much as you can.

First seminar this morning was with David Hill. He was talking about Jazz Rock and how to play more than standard pentatonics. Video says more than I can write.
